Although the annual average rose, prices ended the year lower than they started: $60.37 on Jan 2, 2018 against $45.15 on Dec 28, 2018. From $59.20 on Feb 9, 2018, WTI climbed to $77.41 by Jun 27, 2018, a 31% gain. Between October and November the monthly average fell $13.79, the largest month-to-month change of the year.
Brent carried a wide premium over WTI in 2018, averaging $6.12 more on 248 matched dates, with the widest daily gap $12.18 on Oct 23, 2018. Brent averaged $71.34, up $17.21 (31.8%) from 2017.
Monthly averages peaked early, at $70.98 in July, and bottomed at $49.52 in December. In September 2026 dollars (CPI-U), the 2018 average is $87.53, higher than 2025's real average by $19.09 (27.9%).
